Dirk van den Broek launched self-scanning under the name "Scan Direct" in 2009

On January 22, 2009, one of the leading Dutch supermarket chains Dirk van den Broek went live with self-scanning in their first store in Hoofdorp, close to Schipol Amsterdam Airport. There are 150 Motorola hand-held scanners MC17 running the My-Scan software solution installed in the store. As part of the project, a loyalty card “Zelfscankaart” was launched as well.

Within a few days Dirk have achieved a very significant result: now 20% of their sales turnover in the pilot store is achieved through self-scanning. Which in business terms means that the return on investment (ROI) will be less then 12 month. This is especially important because as a discount chain, they have been
quite reluctant to consider PSS in the beginning.

Based on this positive experience, Dirk van den Broek are planning to roll-out My-Scan system further to their stores this year. The expectations are that the implementation of the system will rapidly increase the supermarket’s popularity with the customers. With Self-scanning, the customer benefits because there will be no need to wait in line anymore: after the shopping trip has been finished, they can proceed directly to the payment machine, with no need to queue further. Time-saving, in combination with the more relaxed shopping atmosphere, make customers come back to the store more often. In turn, Dirk expects to profit from increased customer satisfaction and loyalty, as well as optimize customer flow, especially during the sales peak times. Optimization of operational costs is another benefit of mobile self-scanning approach.
